Ass Bath

Ass Bath

When I reluctantly agreed to join friends at the state fair in Bakersfield, California, little did I expect to discover a different kind of beauty pageant. Walking the fairgrounds of palm readers and dime tossing game booths in the sunny spring air, I wandered into a large I-beam compound housing a dirt arena, bales of hay, makeshift plywood sheds and row after row of pens and corals of barnyard animals in various stages of loading, cleaning, eating, howling, peeing, primping and judging. I listened with curiosity to owners whispering their affection and advice to their pet pigs and hogs. In a moment was captured the dignity, vanity and humor of a fine pig in a beautification bath, in hopes for a ribbon before the crowd and judges and devoted owner.
